How to Winterize Your Pontoon Boat
Even the most experienced pontoon boat owners can come to dread winterizing. This isn't necessarily because the process can seem a bit daunting, but because it means that the season is ending once again. However, if you take your winterizing and boat storage seriously, preparing for the next season will be simple and easy. If you own a Bennington pontoon boat, we want to make sure you have all the tools you need to protect your craft for many years to come. Keep reading for a few of our best tips for winterizing your pontoon boat.
Clean the Boat
This is an essential step that should not be skipped. Nothing is worse than trying to remove dust, grime and barnacle build-up that has been allowed to “bake” onto your boat all winter long. Additionally, mold and mildew can easily spread in moist environments, while any stray food particles may attract insects and rodents.
Winterize the Engine
Be sure to check your engine owner's manual for specific instructions on winterizing your pontoon boat's engine. Some basic guidelines for this task include:
- Disconnecting or removing the battery
- Draining the engine block
- Filling the gas tank at least 3/4 full
- Draining the coolant and refilling with proper antifreeze
- Changing filters
- Switching off all valves
Covering the Boat
While shrink wrapping or covering your boat with a tarp is much better than leaving it exposed, investing in a pontoon boat cover is ideal for protecting your boat. Look for a quality cover that will fit snugly but not too tight and if possible, one that was designed for your specific make and model. Do not use mooring cover for winter storage.
Secure the Boat
Once your pontoon boat is protected from the elements, it's time to consider securing it against theft and vandalism. Security should be a top priority while winterizing, so be sure to dismount all electronics before finalizing your boat storage. You should also remove tires and store on blocks when keeping the boat on land. Lastly, don't forget to invest in a quality boat insurance policy.
